For instance, if I put my name in it comes up with pages from my previous employer's website, which I no longer want to be associated with. How, if at all, can I stop this?

Thanks.

Do you have access to previous website? then you can remove it from there or redirect to new site. I guess you don't, then you have no control on that. You can contact them to remove your info from the page, if possible.

Now, the best thing you can do is to setup a new homepage in your name(in any free domains like angelfire.com). In that webpage you put your name many times. Put your name in title, keyword tags in hte html code.
Now search engine will find your new page.

Provide the link to me and a few other trustworthy people on here. We can all report it as a violation of the terms of service. Because it would be! It violates peoples privacy, undermines anonymity, and is essentially a very bad thing. If your post is deleted for violation, it wont be viewable to anyone... even if the link and description stays available for a while, it will be a cannot find page error. From there, you might be able to inform the search engines themselves (there are far too many to do this) that the page is gone. They may delete it themselves from search results, or else it will just take time. Just pray at that point that these search engines havent archived a copy of the page. They likely will not remove an archive unless the page content is criminal. The whole point of archived pages is to preserve them in the event a page was no longer accessible, or a url no longer valid. And then you also have to contend with archival websites, web preservation technology. There are sites out there where entirely functional web pages can be archived, media and all, and these are not search engines. These archived pages are a part of a users account. And then, last but not least, hope that someone didnt copy the page to their hard drive as an offline accessible page, or print it out on paper, or whatever else It doesnt matter if you deleted your old account or not. YA wont let you delete any questions that have been resolved. There is nothing more that can be done. And I think Im the only one that actually read you question.

It is just about impossible to clear your name from all different websites and in the search engines. If your name was Louise Lount, then my just posting this here in Yahoo will cause it to be picked up by certain search engines.

However, pretty much the two things you can do is:

1) Make sure that your former employer has removed any references to you on their website. I believe depending on the state, you can request that they remove you from their website, new brochures, or other new material. (However, you cannot force them to go back and recall any material already out there with your name in it...)

2) Contact Google or the search-engine and advise them that the webpages they have are referencing old pages that no longer exist (if the employer already took your name off their site)...They should be able to update their links appropriately.

go to that website and tell them to get your name of the ******* site !!!!
Its not google or the other search engines fault Its the stupid site so click the link and see the **** there posting about you. Then contact them the site tell them your name then say "I've got a friend who will get you in serious trouble if you don't get my name off the site " then they most likey will freak out and take your name off of it !!! What the search engines do is they go thew every where in search of what you are looking for anything still existing they will grab it and throw it into your search results. Or contact the company puting your name in there directly by phone . The address is always on the site !!!!!! so is the number if you need help tracking something down.. let me know some how like leave an answer in one of my questions. and I will help you out okay.

ask your previous employer to remove your name form the website. Then wait. It takes a while for new info to be spidered.

Really, there is nothing else to do. If your name is out there, it can be found.

Keywords, mentioned by other answers, are not even used by Google, which searches the text of sites.

I would contact your employer and ask them to remove any references to you. Did you give them expressed and written permission to use your name? It may be just a case of them not updating their site. If it is derogatory or libellous, get a lawyer.
I have learned that nearly every document created for public viewing can be found on this Internet - either in part or in whole. This includes court docs, newspaper articles, company media releases, minutes to town and city councils. Essentially, if it is within the public's right to know, you will find it on the Internet. How can you stop your name from appearing in Google check? - stay out of court and remain anonymous in any public forum.

Stop searching for you name, you could contact google and tell them to stop associating your name with that search. You could also contact the company and tell them to take away your name form any keyword things

I believe that the only way to do this is to contact your previous enployer and ask them to remove your name from thier website and anything associated with you. The search egines ues "meta tags" ie a word which is typed up flags that particular website, unless your employer changes the content of their site there is pretty much nothing you can do about it, x

You can ask your employer to remove them. however some jobs have a photographic permission section written into the contracts. I work at a well know visitor attraction and was asked to give permission for my photograph to be used for promotional materials. I don't know where you stand if you have left employment.
