Generally if someone is told they are better than other people enough they will grow to believe it. Many Americans are taught from birth that they live in the biggest and best country in the world. The government is exceedingly right wing and in some states is basically a theocracy and as such tries to perpetuate this view.
Also given the general morals standards and goals of America the concept of America being the greatest nation may not be inaccurate. The American dream (to become very wealthy and dominate others, have kids, go to church regularly, own a huge car and many possessions) is more attainable in America than most nations. So given the definition of a good life style that most Americans think of America really is the greatest nation in the world.

Herodotus (an ancient Greek historian) concluded that a man will almost always believe his own gods and customs to be the best and those of foreigners to be less worthwhile. This is true of most people today. Personally I have seen some great things here in the UK, some great things in the USA, some in Spain, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Australia, the Czech Republic... even a few decent things in France. Every nation has things to learn from other ones. We all should be taught this and learn from each other.

Have a great day.

Some Americans seem to like a good old fashioned p issing match. The WHO, UN and several international bodies rank countries on several issues to see where the best place is to live. The US is never in the top 5. While I am all for being proud of where you come from, you can be proud and humble not just proud and loud, that is annoying and rude...that is where the tourist name Ugly American comes from. I am shocked at how Little some people know about their neighbours, trading partners and the world outside the US in general, it is actually quite embarrassing to watch.

Looking through your history and questions,I see you say you are an American, born in America, raised in America. You appear to have a huge chip on your shoulder where America is concerned. You are right,we are not all the same, each country has its own unique culture.Of course there are many decent Americans,as there is throughout every country. All your posts are very confusing, one say's how great your country is,others are not very complimentary about the country or its peoples. You appear very angry about something, but you cannot seem to explain why/what. Would it not be a good idea to seek some professional help and get to the root of your anger??

Because arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand. Americans are among the least educated people in the world. Also, the U.S. is basically a geographically isolated country, and Americans in general have little contact with other countries, languages, and cultures. The U.S. is a rapidly decaying country economically, culturally, and especially morally. The day will soon come when we will be relegated to a 3rd class power. China and Russia will soon be the world's superpowers.

Wow... I guess I don't really understand your rant. You seem to be a person who is angry because you know that not all Americans are arrogant but people say crap about America and such. Well thats pretty much what I gathered.

Its hard to place arrogance on any massive group of people, espescially those of a particular country. It all depends on the context. I've known many non-Americans to be extremely arrogant in certain circumstances. Some Americans are arrogant as well.

Now if your rant is about people saying my country is greater than yours... which at this point I think it was. We aren't only ones who say that. So many other people claim their country superior. regretably, we happen to live in the US and get more of this undereducated patriotism firsthand. When you travel to other countries, you don't get as much as normal, honestly... you usually go to tourist places and they need your money =o).

I love America. In some ways we are the best. Some we are lacking. I don't think I'm being arrogant at all to make a claim like that.

It is not arrogant to accept the fact that the world's greatest country is in fact...well, the world's greatest country. If some Americans prefer Europe, why don't they pursue happiness and live there instead? For the rest of Americans that love it here, they shall stay. No harm no foul either way

Most people don't hate Americans. By American, I mean North, Central, and South Americans. However, a lot of people hate people from the United States. One of the top world powers, greedy as hell, and unless you live in a small town, a lot of people in the bigger cities aren't necessarily "united". In geography books, the US is described as encouraging 'rugged individualism', but individuals are often the outcasts. If individuals mattered, it would be called the Individual States of America, haha. If the US would encourage fair wealth distribution and stopped exploiting other countries for land and cheap labor, maybe people wouldn't hate them so much. But what do I know? :] Borders are only lines on a map, they don't mean ****.

I agree I lived in three different EU countries and I have been to the USA. They are very arrogant, they think they got the best technology, best army, best economy....and the fact is that European technology is better and more reliable, if USA has been to Space is because of European scientists. The US army might be the biggest in the world and most equipped on earth, but British army is much better and far more experienced. The economy of the US is great because they steal the resources of poor countries unlike hard working middle class European...so they do not have any reason to be arrogant!

America does have it's good points. It was blessed for eons by the Native Americans and it is a sweet place. But some people have done terrible things and others have adopted the same behaviors.

Start today by thanking the Native Americans for the wonderful Spirits that watch over this land. Say a prayer that the ones who hate and destroy will finally learn that they should love their neighbors.

Make a Native American dish for Thanksgiving in honor of the ones who were destroyed to make your life what it is today.

Natives were great with corn and taught the pilgrims how to grow and prepare it-- make a simple ancient corn pudding in honor of the Natives. Corn (size of one small can's worth), tbsp corn meal, egg, light cream, molasses, maple syrup (to taste), nutmeg, cinnamon, orange zest and a tiny bit of salt. Mix like a custard and cook in the oven in a very small crock.

The Native Spirits will love you for it! Peace!

World's greatest country? That is a relative concept. It depends on what you or anyone thinks is great as a judgment criteria. For example, if you think beauty and living close to the land and preserving environment is what makes a country great, then you may vote for BOTSWANA. If you think technological invention is what makes a country great, believe it or not you may vote for ISRAEL or USA. If you think the answer may be military power, then it could (or maybe used to be USA). If its a debt free country could be DUBAI?? If its for true democracy, could be South Africa (believe it or not) ; If you think its a great country because it has the best medical care for ALL its people could be SWEDEN.
SO you see the question becomes what is great. If anyone is arrogant it is because they are ignorant. But that said, arrogance may often be a perception behind which hides a truly terrified or inept person.
