I think this always was the case until recently and these days women are usually shown in films to be almost inhumanly independant.
If we think back say 20 years to films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Star Wars" the female characters often have to be saved from danger by the male hero.
But these days in similar action films female characters are usually portrayed as being both physically and mentally more powerful than their male counterparts, this is often made into a comic element in the film with the male character becoming comic relief.
In certain films like "Sin City" the female characters are (mostly) second fiddle to the male characters, this is not really sexist it is just the plot of that film and the style of the story.

No... I really feel that women are very independent these days in film and TV... CSI for example. These girls are in control of all aspects of their lives and depend. Everybody seems to be part superhero and totally in control of their lives in TV and film.
