hiya i changed my name legally and it cost me about £55 includsing the mailing back and forth and the service to archive should you lose your copy, it is all legal and i did not need a lawyer, the deed poll helped me get my passport and drivers licence and no hassles
it took less than 10 days and i had a professional sign and witness it for me, i use it for changes with everything that was associated with my former name

You can change your name by common law in the UK, you don't need a legal person at all. I did it this way after my divorce.
You are free to call yourself by any name you like, without resorting to a deed of any kind, provided it isn't done with the intention of breaking the law, ie: fraud, or, to mislead in any other way.
But the latter would be difficult in this modern day, since banks and most companies, especially the DVLA and passport office, will need a written document to be witnessed, to verify you are who you say you are.
Common law does require two witnesses, who must unrelated to you, or one another.
If you want a copy of the common law document, you can buy them online. Or, I could even send you one for free, just hit my link.

With a name like Mello Kello you're now on the right lines. Good question. You can call yourself anything you wish, inside the realm of decency. Smello Skello, for instance, might be nice.
Or Ann Berlin, Charlie Zant, Mary Contrary, Mad Honour or just plain Camilla. Each quite legal. Go for it!

Contrary to popular belief you don't actually have to use Deed Poll to change your name. As long as you inform everyone of your name change you are entitled to be called what you want. You can get a solicitor to draft a letter that denounces your previous name but I think it's extraneous expense and is something you can do yourself.
I know this because I changed my eldest son's surname when I married my husband, obviously his birth certificate remained the same as his name at birth but he was able to get a UK passport in his new name without any bother.

All you need to do is inform all interested parties (e.g. passport office, DSS, Inland Revenue, bank, building society, insurance companies, credit card companies, employer) that from a particular date you wish to be known by your new name.
You don't need to go down the deed poll route unless you want to.
So long as you are not doing this in order to escape debts, or for any other fraudulent reason, you can call yourself what you like.

There is an official way of changing, called "Deed Poll" for which you'd need to consult a lawyer.
However, you are entitled to be known by any name you wish, provided it is not for any illegal purpose, nor considered generally offensive.
