I feel the same way as you do. Unfortunately the world is full of ignorant people. These people know nothing of the regular American persons way of life and know even less about America as a country.
In general most Americans are every day people who work hard for what they have. There is good and bad in every culture and country, we are no different. People the world over are just for the most part doing the same thing as us. They work hard for what they have, raise families, go to school and so on.
This American hating people are the kinds of people who have nothing better to do than bad mouthing Americans. They are the bitter and twisted of this world and probably not too smart either. If they were they would go to the lengths to find out what regular American people are actually like.
I also agree with you on the issue of most people disliking our president. From what I can tell this is fact weather or not he got re-elected. Personally the only way I can understand that is the votes were somehow fixed. We know there were several states that had issues with the voting machines. So why could there not be more. I can honestly say that out of the many different people I meet in all walks of life I cannot find one person that likes or approves of our current president. That in itself certainly makes me and a lot of people wonder how he got re-elected. Well that's my two cents worth!

I don't think that we Brits hate you personally... in fact I would go as far as to say... we don't hate you at all.
There is a little to understand though, which is not to do with you personally. Many Americans who travel outside of the USA expect other countries to be exactly like home... they are not. Further, not everyone speaks English...
I met many Americans out in he old Soviet Union countries... and some we great, they just got on with the job and were pleasant to the locals. However, we did get quite a lot who believed that America ruled the world, that the only culture was American and that unless you spoke English, the locals were uneducated idiots... Sad but true. I even had one tell me... "Of Course I don't speak English - I speak American". I replied "Unfortunately, you do speak English, but very badly!" Sorry, but this is not an untypical remark of some of your countrymen abroad.
More often than not, people generalise and base their views on experience... so if the experience is not so good, then we generalise that all Americans are bad... What has the world seen recently... Bush, Rumsfeld, Iraq Not exactly the best advertisements for your nation.... And we know you're not all bad... just the ones who voted for Bush :)

Its sad how some people (bigots)think.
British people (I'm Welsh not English) come under the same fire, ie someone will say "We hate the BRITISH - they oppressed Ireland" and you want to ask them - "well do you mean the British PEOPLE or the Government?"
Because whatever was done to Ireland was done by the Government, not the people of Britain, who are just ordinary decent folk most of whom are totally against the Government's actions (its not like they do much for us either!), yet we have been bombed by both the IRA and Al Quaida because of what our Government has done!
I don't beleive in a lot of American attitudes - the attitude to the poor ("its their fault they're poor") and the greedy, selfish materialistic attitude so many Americans have but I would never judge the whole nation - I have met some really nice Americans. My BF's Manager's girlfriend is American (half English but grew up in America) and she's lovely! We do tease her a bit and call her a "Yank" and the like but its all affectionate!!!

Well done for bringing this up. I'm Irish and I am completely against what your government has done in Iraq. However, I am also against terrorism by Muslim fundamentalists. Now, I have argued with several people that we can't judge all Americans on the basis of their government and we can't judge all Muslims on the basis of the actions of fundamentalists. When I meet an American or Muslim I argue the same point and judge these people as individuals. If I don't them then so be it but I ain't going to judge YOU on the actions of people who have nothing to do with you. You seem to be like most other Americans I know: level headed individual and free thinking. Keep it up. We don't all hate YOU even though we may not like what your govt does.

You are not blamed and the British and USA people have a common culture, language and friendship that will see the current and any situation through.
The issue is both of our countries politicians and foreign policy that is a very separate issue.
I consider the people have lost control of the politicians and things (Iraq) have been done against the majority of the peoples wishes, therefore democracy has failed in our own countries and it was all based on lies from our politicians.
It needs to be rectified and those responsible held to account.

To your headline question, 'your not'. The vast majority of sensible Brits. know that there is a difference between a government and its people. Many younger people, unfortunately, have been brainwashed by their left wing teachers/lecturers and the left leaning TV media. They are an embarrassment and many of them seem to appear on this site. Please do not believe that they are representative of the population at large. I would make one caveat, however, I do not think that it is healthy to allow Brits. to try to undermine your government in your eyes and in the eyes of the world. In general terms it is not wise to appear unpatriotic because it can lead to undermining your government and even anarchy. Because some left leaning Brits. can't influence your government directly, they are trying to do it by influencing the American people. We don't have to agree with everything that our governments do, but as far as the rest of the world is concerned we should stay quiet until the next election.

People said the American people wouldn't vote him in again in 2004, but that was obviously wrong. If you actually believe that President Bush doesn't want those same things you do -- though I do agree he's had some mis-steps -- then liberalism has done a bang up job brainwashing you. Just as the Republicans have done a great job brainwashing some on the right of believing President Bush has done no wrong.

Take heart - we don't all hate Americans! All the Americans I've met have been great, warm-hearted and friendly. I wouldn't like to think that all other nationalities associated me with Tony Blair when they meet me and, likewise, I don't think of George Bush when I meet Americans! Have a good day and don't take things too personally!

I have found that Americans that I have met have been the most generous and warm hearted of people. Your government doesn't do you any favours abroad through.
There are also some conflicting cultural differences. The English ( generalisation ) don't "Thank God " in every paragraph. By all means fight for "Liberty" and "Freedom" but do it quietly please.
