A contusion (or bruise )is a kind of injury, usually caused by blunt impact, in which the capillaries are damaged, allowing blood to seep into the surrounding tissue. They often induce pain but are not normally dangerous. Sometimes, however, bruises can be serious, leading to other more life threatening forms of hematoma, or can be associated with serious injuries, including fractures and internal bleeding. Minor bruises are easily recognized by their characteristic blue or purple color in the days following the injury.

Contusion is a four-bit word that simply means a blow, but one that doesn't break the skin. contusions result in bruises, usually, or they can result in concussion if they land on the head. Abrasions are where the surface of the skin is damaged, or broken. So when someone is involved in a fight, or an accident, you will often see a note that they suffered from contusions and abrasions. Cuts are when something breaks through the skin and goes into the flesh below.
Contusions aren't usually serious. But it does sound much more impressive than saying they got whacked.

Athletes in all contact sports have many opportunities to get a muscle contusion (bruise). Contusions are second only to strains as a leading cause of sports injuries.
Contusions occur when a direct blow or repeated blows from a blunt object strike part of your body, crushing underlying muscle fibers and connective tissue without breaking the skin. You can also get a contusion by falling or jamming part of your body against a hard surface. Most contusions are minor and heal quickly without taking you out of the game. But severe contusions can cause deep tissue damage and lead to complications and/or keep you out of sports for months.

For example when you hit your head and it swells. But in order for it to be a contusion there has to be internal bleeding (not too deep). The wound has to be closed. And it has to be swollen
