Yes backspin is very important. U know when u shoot sometimes it hits the back of the rim and bounces in? well, without backspin it would bounce right out. If you are looking for material on how to shoot watch the movie "nothing but net"

The ball should have some spin to it, because it shouldn't just go straight at the hoop unless you want to shot a lot of hard bricks.

As a coach, i always tell my players to do what feels best for them (if it works).
However, if i see a player's shot hurting, then i will suggest a change of form.
Best shot scenario: roll the ball slightly off of your middle and pointer finger as you release it.
However, the shot process starts in your feet, moves up through the body, and into the shoulders and hands. The release is just one small part of the whole shot.

The ball is supposed to spin, or you really won't make too many baskets. The ball will be still in the air, and then it will just brick.

yes you are supposed to have backspin. just let the ball roll off your fingertips and you will get it. thats what allows the ball to hit the rim and still go in. if you dont have backspin then it will just hit the rim and bounce out

yea you are supposed to give it a good backspin, this gives you a shooters touch which means even if the ball hits rim it still has a good chance to go in.
