If my employer was using software to spy on my computer doings, how could I tell? I am not doing anything other than occasionally looking at my personal email, but I justify that by figuring that I'm not taking 10-minute breaks every hour to go out and burn a cancer stick by the dumpster like many of my workmates....

Anything you do while in the building or on equipment provided by an employer is their business. It is not considered spying.

You can ask the IT person if your personal computer usage has ever set off an kind of alarm...tell him you are conscientious and want to make sure you fly under the radar...

Most IT guys will appreciate that you are trying to do work at work and understand emails get checked there too. If you ask up front to make sure you are not doing unauthorized stuff, no worry...

My company tracks usage but I listen to music all day so I generally show up as a heavy user. When the tracking software shows him what I have been doing, he ignores it.

Try switching to Yahoo Beta - then your email can always be open and the window in the task bar will tell you if you have anything to check!

Also, my IT guy said my stuff is measured by "clicks" not time any window is open so opening and closing email measures more than leaving it open all the time in a minimized window.

Just ask.

You can't. Most keystroke logging software runs in the background unknown to the user. If you are familiar with your programs loaded on your machine, you could go into the "programs" folder on your hard-drive and see if there are any new programs that might be the logger. The logger software typically has to be loaded onto the PC itself. Best bet? If you think it will get you in trouble, don't do it.

The last job I had before this, my supervisor told me that *everything* that was opened on the computer was accessible to *everyone* in the organization if they googled a word that was in it. I tried it and he was right. Even a word like "house" or "cat"....

I stopped checking my personal email there-- not that I really had anything to hide, but you never know.....

You might not be going out to smoke but you are on the clock and you are using his computer. Since you are not going out to smoke just ask him if you can check your mail. There are laws now that let business companies check on employees to make sure they are doing no wrong. Ask yourself this which is more important your mail or your job.

You see? its underhanded sneaky underminding activity like this that make people not want to work for the corporate world, and instead choose to work for themselves, which is just what I plan to do when I graduate college. No boss is going to but in to my business like that.

I read that 76% of companies are monitoring at some level what employees are doing on line. Also, please realize that Instant Messenger can be tracked now. It is illegal of course for them to do audio.
