Tell me about yourself: Many interviews will start with this question. When you are faced with it, answer by highlighting your finest traits (educational, attitudinal and personal) which best match with the proposed job. Never go into personal details unless specifically asked. Center the interviewer's attention on your academic and professional achievements, experience and specific traits that would benefit the company.

What they are typically looking for, and I know from being the person that was conducting the interview, is for you to tell them a little about your work experience.

"I'm currently an auditor at xyz firm and have conducted audits on various industries such as manufacturing, insurance, banking, non-profit for the last x years. I've advanced from staff level to manager level during my time with the firm"

I've seen people that answre that question with their personal history such as they are married, kids, dogs, blah blah blah. They, the interviewer, just wants to know how you will benefit the firm - your work experience.

In asking this question, they will start to learn about you regardless of your actual answer, by the way you handle yourself. They are though, most interested in your professional background.
