Being Retired Military -- while on Active Duty (and on down time or Leave) -- I did some travel in places around the world, and did eat in fancy restaurants (every so often) -- but I came prepared:

I learned enough of the language of the country I was in to be able to read most of the menu -- to understand the currency, and to successfully order something I wanted to eat. The only difference you have to realize is that what you 'think' in translation means what you are used to at home is not necessarily what you will get when you order in another nation. So if you are aware of that difference -- then you are prepared as long as you learn what you need to know in the first place.

I've only been in two 'really fancy' restaurants in my life, one of which I wandered into by sheer accident. And I may not have understood everything on the menu, but I did understand the prices. Both times I got up and left. Damned if I'll pay $25.00 for something that amounts to meat loaf and green beans.

Oh yes. I can get by with Spanish, French, and Italian menus, but then I'm lost. I had indeciperable menus in Indian food, Moroccan food, and Thai. On all those occasions I had someone who knew what they were talking about and they'd know what I'd probably like the best.

I still don't like Indian food though...too many spices I don't care for.

No, I try to research the restaurants I eat in. If they have a website I'll check out their menu and have my order chosen before getting there.

Yes, it was all in a different language.. I ordered what I recognized. It all turned out good, no one even suspected a thing.
