What do I check now? The desktop picture seems dim and the web pages seem darker,,Anyone have any ideas?

Monitor might be getting old or you may check monitor setting. By mistake he/she would have set it to low brightness. That should be your first choice and then look for any Software settings.

there is this thing called demagnetize its a setting that polarizes the monitor.. If it dont help the monitor main tube may be burning out

have you tryed using a different monitor? just check and you'll know if it's the monitor or the computer. in my oppinion, there is a problem with the monitor... fatigue

He/she is loosing their monitor. no help-when it gets too bad you just replace it. good news is both crt's and lcd's have gotten way cheap.
