Auckland is on a peninsula about 8km. wide, with a good natural harbour on each side; Waitemata harbour on the east and Manakau on the west, so from this point of view it's in a good location. Resources? Closeness to the sea. Some govt. offices are there, but most are located in Wellington, the capital. Auckland is NZs biggest city. Nearly half the country's population live in the Auckland area. It's in the north of the country. Wellington is more centrally located, which is why the capital was moved there from the far north in the 19th century. Auckland is located close to some dormant volcanoes, so maybe it wasn't such a good idea to choose that location.

When New Zealand was settled the settlers needed a good harbor to land at. Auckland has a very good natural harbor. They needed a harbor so that ships coming from England could have a place they could easily unload supplies.

Auckland is where it is because every place has to be somewhere.

If it was somewhere else it would not be Auckland.
