I can't access the memory, and the message says it needs to be formatted.

now it keeps saying "unable to complete format"

right click on the drive and select format

When you connect it to the computer, go to My Computer, (it's in the start menu). Then find the MP3 Player disk in there. .Once you do, then right click the icon. Click format. and then click start when the Format dialog box comes up.

Lets say your mp3 player has a G drive letter assigned by Windows...
Open Command Prompt and type:
format G: /FS fat
