Boxes. It won't really matter what's IN them, the kid will love the boxes most at first. Whatever gift you buy.... put it in a box. lol

Seriously though ~ I always like to give one of those foam/fabric books, and some kind of ball, doll or car.

At one year a child hardly realizes that the celebration is more than someone paying attention to their actions.

The best gift is something that continues to give, like a stuff toy with a gift certificate to a local store where the parents can buy new clothes as the child quickly grows out of all those they receive during the holidays.

Any of the Baby Einstein DVD's are fantastic. Ones available include Baby Bach, Baby Einstein, Baby Shakespeare and so on. My children loved them.

I agree with banananos... the child doesn't realise the celebration as much as you're worried about the present.

The first year is filled with "firsts"... first steps, first words, first haircut, first whatevers. Find something that commemorates that "first".

Here's an idea: toddler shoes for baby to take his/her first steps in, then give the parent a voucher to silver-, gold- or bronze-coat that pair of shoes when baby grows out of them. Baby's parents will adore you for that.

they will want to play with the paper more than a gift. I would buy some cute outfits and maybe a ball, stuffed animals with no parts that can be pulled off.

Well, give them one of those video games for babies you see on commercials, and if that is too expensive, stick with teddy bears!
