If you work in construction, you are not employed directly by the construction company. You work on a self-employed basis. You need a CIS card to prove that you are doing this officially and not cash in hand, and you use the CIS card to pay your tax and national insurance.

You need it because you are classed as self employed and the certifcates proove that your employer has payed your tax. So at the end of the year when you do you tax return hand in the certificates aswell then the revenue wont try to charge tax on your income again.
