Yes, the two words are very similar in meaning. I think that conjecture means the conclusion was reached more rationally and scientifically, and speculation means it is more intuitive, but that is just my impression.

No, conjecture is to take things and put them together and presume a possibility or true statement without much proof. To speculate is to take to be true on the basis of insufficient evidence : THEORIZE . More like thinking about it without enough to go on.

They sound the same, but conjecture is more like taking theories and trying to form a true statement, whereas speculate is to take the same theories, but not have enough of them to even TRY to form a true statement or hypotheses
