My wife likes to leave curling irons on all day. I need a device that would power the curling iron for 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes at a time, for example, then shut off power to whatever was plugged into it. I have seen these as light switches, like when you go into the whirlpool at the hotel, or the heat lamp in your hotel room. Timer.

You can purchase curling irons that have timers on them, I own one. They come in any size. If you leave them on long they shut off after 20 minutes of not being used.

Good idea - - I always having to go back into the house to check to see if it is turned off when I am trying to leave the house.

I have not done this myself, but I know how and might just do it....

You can always make one yourself if you are handy with electrical work by putting in a 4-gang box, one side for a timer like you suggest above, and the other side for the outlet pair. You can even wire the two outlets separately -- one always on and the other one on the timer. Pretty simple to do all this, just have to cut the wall opening to accept a remodel-style double gang box, take out the old one and wire it up. IMPORTANT - don't forget to turn off the power first.

You can have an electrician do this also. Should not cost too much and if done correctly, no wall repairs will be necessary.

Also -- you can get lamp timers that plug in to an outlet and then you plug the lamp into them. I am not sure if they are available for short term applications like that or not.

You can purchase an appliance timer that plugs into the receptacle and can be pre set to go on and off, the other option is a rheostat timer that when set will count down the amount of time that a receptacle will be on. Must be wired into the circuit and mounted to the wall. Good Luck

The best way to cure this habit is to buy the type of curling iron that shuts off automaticly. The type you are describing would require constant setting to use

you could buy a lighting kit with a motion detector for less than 25.00 at home depot and easy to install. It would only come on when some body would come close to the door depending how you set the sensor for distance.
