I am assuming your heating system uses fuel oil. #1. Was the person or firm that serviced your fuel oil furnace licensed by the state you're in? Sometimes the firm is licensed but, some individuals in the firm are qualified on natural gas furnaces, electric furnaces or heat pumps, but not on the very complicated, very dangerous fuel oil furnace. Check with your state HVAC regulatory outfit! If qualified and licensed, call the service firm back and explain the problem--- which I assume did not exist til after the furnace was serviced. #2. If you can smell fuel oil inside your house, it can be potentially very dangerous. There could be an explosion. #3. The chimney could be defective. #4. If the furnace is a high efficiency type, there could be a problem with the exhaust gas fan. Helpful? Personally, I despise fuel oil furnaces for home heating.

Fuel oil has a strong oder that will slowly go away (day or 3) depending on how well ventelated the area is. you could try masking it with a more pleasent smell. The main thing is to check for any wet spots that did not get cleaned, or the oil is leaking, seaping. if it is from spilled oil on floor, a citrice cleaner will do a good job of getting rid of the residue, and not leave a chemicle smell behind like a petrolium based cleaner.

next time you go to the store pick up some small aluminum pans or the like and leave under your oil filter so they don't get it on the floor (cause sometimes they slip out of hand).
plumbing supply stores sell a product that smells like Cherry's and it will reduce the oil smell
