I use pampers as they fit my baby best. Different babies fit different brands. Generic brands tend to be taller and skinnier for some reason.

#1 cheapskate tip: Breastfeed it is free and will save you money in medical bills as well.

#2 buy wipe refills in the bulk boxes. (Buy a few normal ones so you have a couple of plastic holders.

#3 Secondhand stores. Secondhand clothing is usually in perfect condition because often babies only wear an outfit 1 or 2 times. Also the furniture at a store that only handles second hand kids stuff is generally very safe, they do not want to get sued.

We love Target diapers. I think they even work better than the "brand" ones. Remember, most "store-brands" are made by the exact same factories that make the name-brands...they're just labeled differently. Where I am it's 11.99/mega-jumbo pack (112 size ones, or 96 size twos).
OK...money saving tips for baby items:
Find a freecycle group in your area. Just type freecycle into a search engine. People are always giving away stuff their kids have outgrown or never got around to using. Case in point - my daughter outgrew her size one diapers overnight (literally), so I'm giving away a little over half a pack, along with some 0-3 mo baby clothes. You can score some nice stuff sometimes (I got a nearly new exersaucer for free)
Wipes can be bought in bulk - wait for sales, if possible. Even ask the people who work in the baby department if they can tell you when items are going to go on sale - often it's cyclical, and most of them will let you know.
NEVER EVER turn down an offer of baby items from someone. I didn't think I'd ever use this particular arch toy my employer gave me...my baby loves it. You never know what you'll end up using, and you can always give it away or donate it to goodwill if you don't use it.
Speaking of...hit up goodwill/salvation army/amvets. I've found *new* baby clothes there, tags still on. If you're not picky (I"m not) you can often find very good quality used clothing as well.
Take your baby with you when you go to buy toys. See what s/he is interseted in. What you think s/he might enjoy may not be what she likes. I'm amazed at what my baby is interested in.
Also, babies love household items. Mine loves mixing spoons, crinkling paper, and the dog right now. I could keep her amused for hours with just mixing spoons, paper, and a dog. If it's safe (no small or sharp parts), let her go to town with stuff.
Look for free playgroups. Most libraries have a baby storytime or whatnot. Babies don't need fancy classes or lessons. A once a week baby storytime is more than enough, and, really, is more for the mommies. :-) Also a great place to network for....
Child care exchanges. Find a like-minded mommy, and trade-off once a week babysitting or date nights. Example: Each Friday, you watch her kids from 10-2, so she can get errands/appts/etc. done. On Tuesdays, she watches yours from 10-2. Obviously, you tailor the days/hours to your schedules.
That's all I can think of right now...

Personally i like the target brand, they are the same price as walmarts but better quality, little tykes are good but they can be just as expensive as huggies and pampers. White Cloud in a box at walmart is a good deal and are good quality for the money. $15 per box vers $20 for huggies and pampers. Also check out the diapers at Babies R Us, you can get a bigger box with a lot more diapers for around $22. Keep in mind that some kids are allergic to certain types of diapers. My daughter could only take huggies, everything else broke her out in a nasty rash, while my son can wear any brand with no problem.
to save money, keep in mind that newborn babies don't need a lot of infant toys, and you can make a lot of things yourself. Enrole your baby is parents as teacher or healthy families/tender beginings.

I just heard a program when I was driving on exactly that subject and more. Price wise, time effort it is better and cheaper to use a diaper service. About 1/3 cheaper. They also talked about baby necessities and to be careful when purchasing them. Like a baby bassinet, WHY, just a crib is all you need, and the baby is fine. The baby business is a billion dollar industry... so watch you money and go with a "diaper service".

I used pampers baby diapers at first, but now we are using huggies ultra fit. During the pregnancy we bought diapers so we have not had to purchase diapers and the baby is 9 months old. Wipes the best I have encountered on the cheep are babies R us newborn wipes, and target brand wipes that are the equivalent of pampers newborn wipes.

Huggies turned out to be the best, quality wise. Other brands just didn't stack up. However, I used cloth diapers for the first eight months - that was the biggest saving!

Target brand diapers are the best and are half the price as name brand diapers. For example:

You get 112 diapers for $10.54 for size 1, 96 diapers for $10.54 for size two and so on.

They are the best in my opinion. Very comparable to Pampers.

My favorite bargin brand of diaper's is target's. You can get a small pack of these for a little under $6.00. I can't believe how much poop these diapers hold. I think they hold up better then the name brand diapers do. Anyway, I use these diapers for daytime. For the nighttime, I use either Huggies Surpreme or Huggies Overnight diapers.

I dont know if you have a safeway where you are, but it is a grocery store in canada here, and their diapes are probably cheapest I have used, and at first when my hubby brought them home I was kind of pissed cause they werent pampers and I thought they might leak or give her a rash but they work just as good as pampers, and dont leak and are just so much cheaper then name brands. So I would try cheap diapers and see if they work for you, I was suprised but they worked great for me, far better then huggies. GOod luck.

We use Parent's Choice diapers from Wal-Mart for our daughter who is almost 9 months. We tried every kind of diaper out there and these ones seem to be the best deal. They are soft and they don't leak!!!

Money saving tips...
Breastfeed (Formula is expensive).
Always remember, name brands don't matter, your baby won't care what kind of clothes he/she is wearing!
Try to get family to babysit when you need a sitter (It will save you a ton of money!)

Good luck!
