For me the most widespread and tragic irony lies with those who in a fervent spirit of religious zeal are willing and able to inflict the most terrible hurts on others. The "...I am only doing this for the good of your soul" or other twaddle; when they are generally acting in direct contradiction of the essence of their faith, usually over some petty point of dogma.
A corollary to this is those who in practicing their 'loving' religiion are so ready to make others (usually of a different religiion) into an 'outgroup' and from there are capable of the utmost inhumanity against them. Where are we seeing THAT in the world today?
