My family, including younger kids, have done this many times over the years.
1) The hardest part is finding the toll road when winding through Tijuana, not a biggie though.
2) Choose eother the toll road or the free road that runs roughly parrellel. Both are perfectly safe but the free road is more crowded, has trucks and has lots of stop signs.
3) I like to stop at the hotel Americana south of Rosarito Beach.
4) We eat and drink local drinks, local taco stands, and never had a moments problem.
5) The drive is very pretty...tons of dramatic Ocean views.
6) Stop at Rosarito baech, or the lobster restaurant vieelge, good stops.
7) Keep your sense of self. Poverty is there. If you eat at a taco stand in Rosarito, a little kid may crawl up in your lap trying to sell chicklets or jewlery trinkets whatever. Buy the kid and his family a bunch of dollar tacos...they need to eat too.
8) Do not skip the Ensenada fiush market. Go out back to the pier...can't miss it , next to sidewalk which winds around bay. You will likely see a four foot something, round, older mexican of Indian decent...women. She will ask you for a dollar. Give her the dollar. She will get a 400-500 pound sealion up next to you on the dock and will feed this wild animal a fish head. Very amusing and a little novel.
9) Continue south pass Ensendad another 40-5- minutes...bo the El Bufadora. This amazing place should not be missed.
You walk through a bunch of stores and stalls selling all sorts of wonderful things. You will walk dwon to the edge of a 150 foot cliff, El Buffadora. A natural squeeze point makes the ocean go flying up in the air, a natural blow hole...spectacular.
Do not be afraid......drive in daylight hours...enjoy the great people of Mexico.

We drove from BC to Vicente Guerrero Mex in July. We stayed in Ensenada....it's fine. Stay in the main tourist areas but there are tons of places to shop on the outskirts esp. if you have a car. A huge mall and Costco on the highway going south out of Ensenada too. No worries. There are lots of hotels/motels that are cheaper just blocks from the tourist drag....just don't go walking around after dark and make sure your care is in a well lit area. Air conditioning would be nice but we were in an '84 VW van and survived!! Pick up a case of water in Costco if you are going further south as the stores get few and far between but in Ensenada and the other main towns there is tons of bottled water, juice, pop etc.

Excellent drive. Lots of good restaurants and shopping. Be sure to stop at La Fonda Hotel and Restaurant, good food, lively bar and splendid view of the ocean. Best to drive in the daytime, there may still be that errant horse looking for home. Bottled water widely available. Bien viaje.

Bring your water, don't go to lonesome alleys. And have fun.
