Dont give me the usual answer"because we stop looking when we find it".....In MY case, it is always in the last possible place that I can look, the bottom of the stack, the most outlandish place.....

Humans have a need to seek (thrill of the chase), and will subconsciously delay the finding to prolong the seeking part. It may be just another distraction from the reality of life (you know, the fact that we are floating around on a rock in a universe too immense to imagine, and the fact that any control we think we have in our life is just an illusion etc...).

Though I'm no expert whatsoever I've recently caught a few empirically based programs (TV and audio books) about how our minds work and how we learn, that lead me to think that it's because of stress. When we're relaxed we learn much more easily (I'm sure you can think of cases where that's been true), and (quite importantly) can generate original ideas - we experience those semi-profound "aha" moments. But when we're dealing with the hustle and bustle of everyday life and are exposed to the bombardment of thousands of messages broadcast all around us, we can't tune in to those thoughts and ideas coming from our own minds. It makes sense then, that the state of stress we're in when hurriedly looking for something acts as noise in our brain drowning out our own recollection of where we left that thing. (you can see how this might create a vicious circle, since not finding something we need tends to add to our stress). So this stress-based concept (which is undoubtedly NOT being mentioned here for the first time), could also explain why you don't remember some trivial fact (like which other movie you saw that actor/actress in) until later, when you're relaxed and not even trying. (funny how that works, huh?) Anyway, maybe what helps is to notice how stressed we're getting and then consciously get rid of the worrying which only interferes.

In other words, peace out...!

Well, if you quiet yourself ignore that voice inside of you that keeps saying "there's no way it's there, keep looking". That's rationalization speaking which is often clouded because it's looking for logic. Once you shut that down and stop avoiding the place that your instincts tell you it's in you will find whatever it is in the first place you look. Our memories are often better than we realize. Unless someone else has moved the object it's going to be in the last place you left it and so that image is imprinted in your mind. We just have to learn to listen better to our inner voice, or gut instinct and we will most often make correct decisions.

Sorry, but you can't avoid the reality that after you have FOUND the missing object, there is no need to look further, so that MUST be the 'last' place. Why should/could/would there be anywhere else after that? It's really the reverse of the saying "The longest journey starts with the first step".
Think about it.

I have often asked that question myself. I think that we start looking in the places where we would expect to find things. As you work down the list of probable choices you begin to look in places where you would not expect to find it. I have a kitchen drawer that holds utensils. Very often the utensils get pushed out and fall into the cupboard below back behind the pots and pans. So if I were looking for a pancake flipper I would not start looking in the pots and pans cupboard.

Because that is the last place you look. You don't expect it to be there, so you check that place last. You don't want to waste time looking, so you look in the difficult, outlandish places last.

The answer is still the 'usual' answer. Next time you think you find something in the last place you looked - keep looking.

Could be becuase we tend to overcomplicate things. You know where you put it but when you start looking and can't find it you kind of panic and then you completely forget where you have too look and when yo go back there you suddenly find it.
