If a teenage boy comes to you for advice shaving for the first time, what advice would you give him?

Let's say this young man is 16 years of age and about to shave hair off his face for the first time.

If he is shaving for the first time he needs to get some the following:

moisturising shaving foam/gel (preferably with added aloe-vera)
a lubricated razor
moisturising aftershave balm
tissue/toilet paper

1. Soak the face by continually spashing with HOT water or apply a steamed towel for about 3-5mins. It needs to be hot to relax the face and open the pores.

2. Apply the foam/gel evenly over the area requiring the shave.

3. Now with a steady hand shave in the SAME direction as the hair is growing. He won't need to shave against the grain until his skin has toughened and the hair is thicker.

4. Wash face completely and add a moisturising balm to take away the burning sensation.

5. Apply small peices of tissue to any cuts.

I may not have been shaving for as long as many people who have answered this question, but my Granddad taught me and he was an Officers Man. I'm 26 and had to start shaving at 13/14 So I have had a fair amount of practice to!!

I don't have much experience, but I do shave regularly so here is my answer. I first started shaving a year ago, and I only shave my nether regions and uni brow but these are my universal tips: 1. Shave with the grain, move the razor the same way the hairs grow, otherwise it could get bloody. 2. Shave in the shower with a non electric razor and rinse the area when done. 3. Be gentle and thorough to get a nice uniform look. 4. Twice a week is good for shaving, I shave every three days 5. If he cuts himself just let it heal naturally

He should shave after a shower because the hair will be softer.

He should shave with the natural growth of the hair, ie: with the grain. This will reduce irritation.

He should alway use hot water when shaving it will aid in the keeping the skin supple and prevent cuts,

After he has shaved he should use a shaving balm to relieve razor burn and other irritation. which there will be initially, he is scraping off the the outer layer of his skin after all

initially it will be better for him not to shave everyday to give the skin chance to heal and recover. as well as having the benefit to keep shaving everyday at bay for longer.

If he suffers from acne, it will be better for him to use an electric shaver as it is not so harsh on the skin. If he finds a razor more comfortable then he should ensure to change the blade on a regular basis to prevent the acne from spreading.

One needs to shave if there is too much of facial hair.Initially don't shave very often, otherwise the hair starts growing faster and you'll end up shaving every other day.Shave once in 10 days then since it grows faster shave once in a week which is more then enough.Shaving at your age is common.In fact many people start when they are 16

Try to talk him out of it!!! The hairs will only become thicker and he will have to continue to shave regularly. It might seem exciting shaving for the first time, but when it becomes an everyday necessity, it's no fun believe me, sometime I wish I had no facial hair at all.

Ask him to leave it for a couple of months.

run the razor up and down, never sideways. And use WARM/HOT water, never cold unless you want to bleed like a sponge.
