I have an XP and windows me...I already have rj45 crossover cable which will be installed later...

Is there any other information that I need to know except to just plug it and search for it in the network?

Since you stated you already have a crossover cable, you cannot use a hub/switch. A crossover cable is only for directly connecting two PC's together.

You do not need anything else hardware-wise. Just plug each end of the crossover cable into each of the PC's.

Then, make sure you configure each PC with a different IP address. You can use 192.168.1.1 for the first one, and 192.168.1.2 for the second. Use 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask for both and leave the rest of the fields empty.

The network should work fine.

Okay simple way,

use your cable connect from one nic card to the other.

You dont need a switch!!! Only if your connecting 3 or more!!
This process is called peere to peer.

nic card is the network adapter (of course you know this) okay on each computer got to the:

Control Panel >> System >> Click on the Computer Name tag.

Now, click on the change button. Then change the Work Group name something else. Like 'Tester1', make sure both computers have the same name.

Make a note of the computer names above. Reboot both machines.

Click 'Start' > 'Run'
Then type in the other computers name. A window will then appear showing the contents of the other computer.

Hope this helps...

m_s_m_24 is right, to connect only two computers you don't need any switch or hub.

Remember, that first you run the assistant to configure a home network on the XP system, and in the last step, it will create a disc to configurate the net on the other system... I think you wouldn't have any problem...
