Ask the parents if there is anything in particular that they need for the baby. That way, you can get an idea if they're hoping to receive outfits or toys, or supplies like bottles or diapers.
My son is 9 months old and I'm planning on getting him a fischer-price piano that I saw at Toys R Us. When he was smaller, I loved getting board books, toys that made soft noises and lit up, and clothes.
Some things that the parents might like if they don't already have one are bouncy seats, tummy time mats, a circle seat (can't think of the proper name, but it's that thing where the baby sits in the middle and has toys all around the outside), a second stroller (an umbrella type, maybe, for quick trips), or a baby gym a bar with toys hanging from it that the baby can kick at and reach for).
If you get clothes, make sure that if they are not going to fit him right now, that they are appropriate for the season when they will fit him. My son was born in February, and some people bought clothes that were sized 3-6 months (which is GREAT because they grow out of the teeny tiny clothes so fast) that were made out of heavy fleece and had long sleeves. Not many of them thought about the fact that my son would be fitting into those clothes in June, July, and August when the temperature here is in the 90's.

I think a baby present is more for the parents when the child is younger than 3. Get the parents something useful...blankets, onesies, t-shirts, a cute outfit. Or maybe a gift certifcate for a photo session for the baby along with a picture frame!

The child is not going to know much of what's going on so I would suggest a cute outfit and maybe a small rattle. The best thing would be a Baby Blanket with silk on it. Kids love the feel of sillk. My daughter at 2 won't go to bed without hers and my son didn't give his up until he was 6.

Books with black and white pictures...A bouncy chair that they can sleep in that plays music and vibrates...A baby swing for when he/she gets a little older..Clothing as a baby tends to out grow clothing fast..How about the 2006 coin collection from your local post office?? Or a baby's first stocking with his/her name on it?? Or his/her very first blanky..Diapers/wipes/baby shampoo/gift card to wal-mart or target (very useful and practical)

A rattle and a cute little sweater and hat. An engraved silver baby cup would be nice too.

A pack of onesies or a really soft blanket. Whatever you give the parents will be thankful for. Oh! Diapers and wipes...needed and a large expense!
