Platinum is mined like other metallic elements, the price for refined platunium tends to always be about twice the price of gold, even tho there are many many more tons of gold on earth than platinum.

Not only does the basic metal cost more than gold, fabricated platinum objects (like rings) cost more to make because platunum, unlike gold, is very hard so it is more difficult to shape..
