Elephants because they are stong and can be very agressive. They would use their tusks to stab the polar bear if they don't trample it. Normly, though, most beings just run away at the site of the immense size of an elephant. I'm not saying that the polar bear will run away, but it would probably stand down and be dicouraged.

Assuming it's not being held where the polar bear would overheat or the elephant would freeze...
The facts:
A large polar bear will weigh in at 1 ton.
A walrus (according to wikipedia) weighs up to 1.8 tons.
A fully grown bull elephant weighs over 5 tons and has skin over 10 cm thick.
The argument:
Did you see the programme Planet Earth a couple of weeks ago? In it a polar bear attacked a walrus. The polar bear couldn't bring down the walrus and eventually starved to death.
If the polar bear couldn't take a walrus which was also hampered by the fact it was on land and not in the water, then it would have absolutely no chance against the elephant.
The following week, Planet Earth showed an elephant being killed by a pride of lions. However the elephant they killed was a smaller female, and there were 30 lions.
The answer:
Neither would win. The polar bear would definitely NOT be able to kill the elephant. But the elephant is extremely unlikely to want to kill the bear, so the elephant would have a few scars and the polar bear would have a few broken bones (when 5 tons runs into you, you KNOW about it), but both would limp away.

On Freezing temperature I'm absolutely sure the Polar Bear will win because of the freezing weather the Elephant can't survive.
On a Hot/Tropical temperature the Mighty Elephant will absolutely win the fight because of the weigh and strength of the Elephant can crush down the Polar Bear and for some reason the Polar Bear can't survive the Heat. But i vote for the Elephant.

A polar bear. Because he has such hard conditions to deal with, he has no spare time for mercy. Elephants are really merciful. Also because a polar bear is a carnivore, and an elephant is not. Makes all the difference in aggression, somehow.

It would depend if it was hot or cold, wouldn't it? The elephant is much more powerful though and could trample the polar bear to death, even though it might get ripped a bit by the polar bear's claws first.

the elephant of course. the only way to defeat an elephant is with numbers. if it were a ten polar bears then maybe they'd win, but just one wouldnt stand a chance.
hurray for elephants!

I'd say their chances are 50/50. In ten fights polar bear wins five, elephant wins five. Evenly matched.
