Mine are starting lose color and the guitar is about 7 yrs old.

You should change strings after every 50 hours of playing or every 2 months, whichever comes first.

If you break a string I always recommend that you replace the whole set...they cost less than $10.

You need to change guitar strings when they corrode (change color)
or if you play allot they wear out. I play approx. 22 hours a week and I have to change strings every 2 weeks or so. To tell if they are worn out run your fingers on the bottom of the strings G B A (the smallest strings on the bottom) they will be rough like leather and sharp. You can cut your self so be careful! You can play on worn out strings but you lose tone. Also if you like to bend strings to achieve different notes it becomes more difficult.

Then yes, you do need to change the strings - its not difficult to buy or change them and they are cheap.

Generally you should change them fairly often, every couple of months. The age of the guitar doesn;t really have anything to do with the strings. Change the strings when they start to fray, or there is some fret buzz, or it is uncomfortable to use them. Common sense, really...

i normally know to change my gitar strings is because they are broken.but i'm not sure if that the way it normally is.
