Did you leave something defrosting? Have you got an artificial wall behind your kitchen units? have you got kids? Does your husband get very drunk? Did you have heavy rain ? Has the water appeared before? leak in the kettle? Poltergeist?
See if it happens again when you have a shower, if it does , check the shower drainage. , or where you dry your self after your shower, or the water heater, or hot water feed to the shower.
Water can find its way across ceilings and down walls quickly, sometimes it takes time to soak through and become visible.

It sounds like your shower drain is leaking or the drain pipes below the shower are leaking.
Is the shower drain right over the cabinets? Water has a funny way of finding it's way down. You may have to open the ceiling up in the kitchen to see what's up.
The drain fitting screwed to the bottom of the tub/shower may be loose or the putty is gone.
You also may have a leak in the hot or cold water line feeding the shower valve. See if you have an access door behind the shower valve.

Rae, You have a leak, sounds like drain leak, Stop the drain up and run or pour about 1 gallon of water in shower, have someone in basement watching unstop the drain and see where the water is coming from. Another idea would be chalking around the shower.

Run the shower and check downstairs while it's still running. Did a bottle of something fizzy explode in the kitchen? Wasthe water clean or dirty? Did the boiler safety valve blow off?
Let us know when you find out...

When this happened to me it was caused by the bath sealant wearing out. Water had dripped through the gap between the bath and the tiles. It is surprising how much water can get through.
If it is this, then scrape off all the seal and apply new sealant.

Run the shower then go downstairs and watch, you should soon see where it's coming from.
