Theory 1: They do it to save elecrical power. (It's about money)

Theory 2: They know it's more fun to watch a movie in the dark, and they don't care if it ruins your eyes anyway --anything to get more people to come (It's about money again)

Theory 3: So pickpocketers can have an easier time (getting your money).

Semantic/technical observation: First of all, light comes from the screen, so you are really never actually watching TV in the dark because you wouldn't see anything on the set. Secondly, who says it ruins your eyes (can you say "urban legend" ?).

The cinema projector is nothing more than a light source (shining through the film of course!), hence it is acting like a flashlight - and there is no point in using a flashlight in daylight, since thecontrast between ambient and the light source is no great enough. However, with a TV screen the source of the light is the screen itself. Your eyes are focussed on that source which, unless the ambient light is excessive (e.g., sunlight streaming into the room and shining on the screen), the contrast between ambient light level and the screen light output is sufficiently different for you to be able to view the action on the screen without a problem. Therefore you can watch your TV with a light on in the room!

Because in a cinema the picture is projected forward onto a screenand therefore too much lighting would ruin the picture, but a tv's picture is projected forward so extra light won't make a difference

The darkness of the room focuses your attention on the brightness of the screen. This allows the teenagers at the back to give eachother hand-jobs uninterrupted.

It's so they can brainwash you with all the 20 minute commercials before the film. Once they got your total attention and you can't focus on anything else they send messages into your mind (may even turn you into murderers and assassins).

Looking at a bright screen does not damage the eyeball itself. It merely strains the muscle that moves the eyeball.
