Density = mass/volume. Your feces float because the density of the feces is less than that of water. Your feces sink because it has a greater density than water. You can trace this back to what you are eating. I would venture a guess than some food substances like lettuce and vegetables, would produce feces with less density than water and would float. Perhaps meat products, or more solid food would then sink.

I have read in books on health that when your fecal matter sinks you should take medication to clean out your colin. It may mean that their is something wrong down their. However if it floats it means your colin is fairly healthy and you have not to worry.

Because when you do your buisness, your poop goes down and once it hits the water, it absorbs some of it making it heavier then sinks.

If you have normal digestion, feces should sink. When you have malabsorption of fats and lipids, they are excreted in the feces. Fats and lipids cause floatation.
The clinical word for it is steatorrhea. The layman's term is "floater" or "the infamous terd that won't flush."

Fats are generally less dense than proteins and carbohydrates. Stool that floats usually has high fat content.
