the maker of nintendo said that "Wii" stands for the noise that people make while on roller coasters. It sounds wierd but that is what they said

"Wii" is pronounced we as you already know. Nintendo did this because they wanted a system we could all play...simple as that...and it is fun as well.

I think it may be a play on the word Wi-Fi, as if you think about it the Nintendo Wii has WIRELESS controller remote. Just like a internet 'Wi-Fi' Connection, it is Wireless.
