According to Sec 19 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 Divorce petition can be filled in the court (place) where marriage was solemnised (i.e India in your case), or where the parties live or where both the parties last resided. So you can also fill such a case even in US as you are both living there or last resided together.

You're not recognized by the American government as a married couple if you didn't register in a court, whether it be a court in India or a court in America, since this is only a Hindu marriage, you did all those rituals and signed some papers with the Pundith in your presence or whatever than you should divorce it that way as you are not a citizen of the USA. Luck.

File for the divorce where your marriage has been performed. It is said that as per Hinda Marriage Act, your marriage has been performed. Hence, you have to file for divorce as per Indian laws only.

If you are only married in India you have to do your divorce there and then you must register your divorce here in the US. The reason for is because if you want to remarried on the future you are not going to be accused of bigamy

You probably need to go to India if you were married in India. Can you check with some other friends though? I am not sure.
