Ok, as a teacher, I can give you my two cents. Effort is certainly important. You won't get any good results without it. Yes, having natural talents and intelligence helps, but I have had plenty of students who I wouldn't consider A students get A's in my class. How? 1. Effort - working hard to learn. 2. Recognizing their deficiencies and working on fixing them. For a lot of students of mine, it's writing. So they write drafts beforehand and have me proofread them, and have other people proof them and edit. 3. Picking up the easy points - doing all your homework nets you a lot of good credit. Pay attention in class, and work to raise your hand and answer questions, or even ask some yourself. That lets the teacher know you are interested and you care and want to learn and improve your situation. A lot of students worry that it makes them look bad (either dumber or too smart) and don't, but what the teacher thinks in the long run is going to be a lot more helpful than what a few of your peers think. 4. Use the teacher as a resource. Ask for help, ask them to proofread and go over things and get ideas from them. It's not exactly gaming the system, but a student who shows they care might just get that little extra edge come grading time.
You'll find that all of these things will ultimately make you a smarter individual and a better student.

You're right that sometimes it depends on the teacher. Sometimes you get an unfair grading system, sometimes the course isn't taught in a way that works to your strengths. However, that's life. Play the hand you are dealt, and play it to the best advantage possible.

Good luck.

You should work hard, watch less tv, unless its one of the learning channels (discovery channel, history channel, animal planet, etc.), and surf on the internet less. It is true that sometimes a teacher hates some of his/her students, and picks favorites, but it is always possible to get on a teacher's good side. Either way, try your best, do all of your homework (I am sure you do), and be on your best behavior in class. Good Luck! :)

I have straight A's, I study 2 hours a night, do homework around 3 hours a night. I do not have time for friends, and I do all my homework on time.
