Hook garden hose to outlet at bottom run outside or to the toilet and open valve should be enough when you see clear water or water turns cold.

I am not entirely sure what you mean.. If you mean the HOT water heater.. then that is easy.. AND you should do it once a year.. Leave the electrricity or gas(whichever you have) ON and also leave the water to it ON.. Attach a garden hose to the spiget at the botton front of the hot water heater.. let the hose extend to an outside area.. Turn on the spiget and let the water run full blast out...Lots of rust and/or calcium stuff will come out.. Let it run for a while and then..... turn off the spigit at the hot water heater.. unhook(take off) the garden hose and you are finished.

There should be a valve at the bottom of the tank. Open it and drain the water out, until it looks clear.My hubby does this every fall and spring. It takes about 2 mop pails full to get most of the scaleing out.

I WOULD THINK DRAIN THE HWH, RE FILL WITH VINEGAR 10 % - STRENGTH - THEREFORE IT WILL NOT KILL YOU - HEAT THE HWH TO MAX & OPEN ALL THE HOT TAPS IN THE HOUSE SIMULTAENOUSLY!
