the coin has slight damage but all markings are still visable.

Dealer bid for an About Good is $45.00. That is without any damage. Legends being visible and being able to read them, are two different things. The legends have to be clear enough to identify, to be an about good. There are a lot of varieties of this cent, some being rarer than others and the better the coin the easier it is to identify what variety it is. You need to take it to a coin dealer. Now that is if it is an American cent if a British penny you need to state so and re-ask the question.

if this is the large and heavy penny, called a cartwheel penny, then not as much as it should be!, list price is £4 but they seem to be very common, if it was extremely fine condition, then maybe £2

A modern day penny isn't worth anything, so why would you think a 1797 penny is worth anything. Oh and for a question like this you need to be in a diffrent category.

a pic would be slightly helpful. It depends on condition, and a whole lot of other factors. that old, I'd like to see it, just for curiositys sake.

take it to a museum, they will tell you if its worth anything or not, they are so often found these days i doubt it will be worth much but you never know.
