They want to get presents. God and religion has nothing to do with it, it's all about gift-getting.
It's a lot like becoming a politician in order to get bribes.

That is a very interesting question. The truth is that Jesus really wasn't born in December, & alot of Christmas traditions are really pagan traditions. (example: christmas tree, gift giving etc.). Jesus never commanded his disciples to celebrate his birth. Rather he commanded them to remember his death. Because without his death we could not have the hope of everlasting life.
With that said I am not surprised that there are some athiest's who do celebrate it especially if they know of it's pagan origin. And there are some Christians like me who have learned of the pagan origins of Christmas, & knowing how God feels about paganism have decided not to celebrate it. During Christmas I do remember Jesus & I might watch a movie about him & read a story about him to my daughter from her bible story book. But I don't make a big celebration out of it.

It's not supposedly the celebration of Jesus' birth, that is precisely what it is. I would say they're being hypocrites, but they want to convert Christmas into a secular holiday, and might say that they are merely celebrating "winter holiday" and not actually celebrating Christmas.
If they are atheists and say they celebrating Christmas, then they are hypocrites.

Nope, it's not Jesus's birthday.
Almost every major belief system celebrates the winter solstice in some form--there's no reason why athiests shouldn't if they choose to.
