It seems that I get the run-around unless I'm with a guy. Thankfully, I know enough about cars to know when it's happening, but it's still annoying. What's up with that?

Unfortunately there are shops that try to rip off women and even men that don't have a clue. They feel that if they baffle you with BS that you will buy what they tell you and they can rip you off. I know of some cities here in Illinois that will teach women and men a basic overview so that you are more informed when you go to a mechanic. If you know the little stuff and even some of the big stuff, you will be able to tell if someone is trying to rip you off.

I think that used to be the case 20 years ago. Now with the job markets being so diversified and both men and women getting into the automotive field that this really doesnt take place nearly as much anymore. I think that what the one person before me said that it is done with men or women. If you go in and have no clue what is going on that unfortunately yes there are many mechanics that will take advantage of this. That is why it is so important to establsh a good relashionship with your mechanic or dealer. When you know people it is harder to mislead them I think. Any way I am sure that this is still a problem but I dont think that it is just with women.

It's because you are an exception. Most women I know don't know much about cars. It's not because they are dumb or anything, it's just that as long as there are men around to take care of the car, they have no need, and therefore no interest in knowing about cars. You may think I am being chauvanistic, but the very fact that you are asking this question proves my point. I have seen it time and time again. There are many men who know less about cars than women, too. But the fact is, men as a whole are more interested in cars than women, therefore they know more about them. Just to put this all in perspective, if I went to a candle party or a Tupperware party or a cooking party, I would be lost. I would be the one bringing home a trunk full of useless crap just because the host saw me as an easy target. Male and female stereotypes didn't just happen. They have been refined over thousands of years of human existence. And from what I have seen in my life, a lot of the stereotypes are dead-on, and men and women prove them out every day.

***The most important thing is to always let the customer know what you are doing. If 20 minutes has gone by and you have not gotten to their car yet let them know. Everyone hates going somewhere where the communication is lousy, especially women.*** #1 They are interested in knowing what the customer wants and not just making suggestions. #2 They are not telling you what they are going to do, but asking what you want them to do about the problem. #3 They are patient on the phone as well as talking with the customer in person #4 They are trying to take care of your car in the same manner and speed as the other customer's cars #5 If you are waiting for your car, they make sure you are comfortable in the waiting area. #6 They make sure they maintain good eye contact. (this for lots of reasons) #7 Try to show the customer what the problem is as best as they can as well as explain it. #8 If you have any unruly woman come in, make some excuse that they cannot work on her car. These type of women usually keep the trouble coming. And remember, she may come back for more work. This will also take other customers away from your business. As far as location, most woman will go wherever the best trust/relationship is. But of course, you need to be in one of the best high traffic areas to get good business from both men and women.

what is this? the woman-alliance =) lol just playin.. but really tho.. this happens with any1 that is car-retarded.. its just that girls know less about cars, generally.. its the way the world works, if ur too stupid to know that u dont need ur brakes replaced when ur engine wont start.. then ur easy bait.. so dont rush urself.. find sum1 that knows stuff about cars and then go, men or women... ITS NOT JUST U GIRLS =).. (im not saying its girls fault or they are stupid like every1 above me has said.. its just different interests) .. but if you think about it.. it makes sense.. men get nice cars to get girls.. girls are attracted to guys with nice cars, so they drive in the guys car and never need to worry about that under-the-hood crap.. the exception is independent girls like the ones that are on these forums, lol... dont kill me for the steriotypes i might have said.. but its the only way i could think to explain it..

it's not only women. mechanics recognize when a man doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. so, if you take a man to the garage with you, be sure he has a clue about auto mechanics.
