I read a Pier 1 ad on a newspaper insert like this: Terrific Tree Trimmers, super cool holiday ornaments $4 to $8 each, which leaves me wondering if tree trimmer is another name for tre ornament.

Actually the ad is correct. tree trimmers would be a plural to a trimmer. A tree trimmer is actually one ornament. Trimmers would be the plural. Meaning that in the ad you are going to pay $4 to $8 for one ornament or one set of ornaments. The other answer is also correct in that a tree trimmer could be a title for someone actually decorating the tree. ie: tree trimmers could be a single ball for the tree or a pack of four sold as a set, or even a strand of popcorn to wrap around the tree, trimmers would be multiple balls or ornaments purchased seperatly. Never really thought about it before. Very interesting question.

Aaargh, yes I suppose it is!
Obviously, tree TRIMMINGS would be correct and the people who put those trimmings on the tree would be the tree TRIMMERS, but no-one seems to care anymore about our lovely English language.
