Nothing will hurt unless you expect it to. The only thing that is close to hurting is the speculum [I believe that's what it's called]. This instrument is stuck inside of the vagina & "opened" so that the doctor can clearly see the cervix and uterus.
For me, they pushed around on my stomach asking if there was any pain, used the speculum, asked some simple questions [Drugs, alcohol, smoking, sex], and then I got my blood drawn.
Since I was not sexually active at the time, they did not do a pap smear, which is where they take a q-tip like thing & swab inside of your vagina to check for different things.
They'll usually tell you what they're doing. No reason to be scared, but it's perfectly fine to be nervous.
Good luck, and I hope this helped.

Well, this is what I experienced with my woman's health practitioner. First you get naked and dress in that paper cloth robe thing. Then the doctor will have you place your feet in these stirrups... as though you might be delivering a baby. They'll insert the speculum, and they'll click it open (don't worry they use surgical lube). They'll spread your vagina a little bit, it may feel uncomfortable, but it shouldn't really hurt (they use plastic so it isn't cold like metal). Then the doctor will take a few little instruments and scrape the inside of your cervix. This sounds painful but it only feels like a little tickle. That's it! It'll last probably a minute or two. If your doctor is good, they'll talk to you while doing it to keep you distracted. Then, they may do a breast exam. You'll expose one breast and hold the same side arm up, while they rub their fingers in circles around your breast. This doesn't really hurt either... unless something is wrong!
All in all it isn't as scary as you may expect... I was very scared the first time I went too, and embarrassed! But you aren't the only one =) Just let your doctor know any concerns you may have. Good luck!
(keep in mind I was sexually active when I had my first exam... so if you aren't sexually active they may do it differently)

When you go to the gynecologist try you best to relax and not to be afraid. Look at it this way the instruments may look scary but if it were so bad their office would not be full of people. It is mostly a little embarrassing and not really all that big of a deal. If you relax the time will go fast and you will do fine. Take along something like knitting or a book to read while you wait. This will relax you and it will be over before you know it. Tell the nurse that you are frightened so her can help you to relax and overcome your fear. You will do fine.

Oh sweetie, i am 44 years old and had to do this many times and every single time to this day i get nervous!!! Not because it hurts, pehaps a little uncomfortable but because i just don't like it and so does every other woman out there.
I can't say that you will get used to it but i can say that after your first visit it will get a little easier.
Don't be afraid, the doctors and nurses are very patient and kind. Remember, they do this all the time. You are nothing new to them.
When you are on the table...think about them in the same position until it's all over. Might give you a little giggle...lol
Good luck honey, stay healthy!!!

It's not painful... at least I didn't find it painful at all... it's just weird.
Your going to be asked to put your feet in stirups. The doctor will sit on a stool at the bottom and enter a specualum inside you. All a speculum happens to be is a tool that once inside, helps open up so the doctor can see your cervix. If for some reason it hurts when they insert the speculum, you can ask for a smaller one; they have it.
After that is finished, the doctor will insert his or her fingers while pressing on your stomach. They are just checking to make sure your ovaries are ok.
It's quick I promise. Just a tad weird.

Going to a GYN the first time is a bit scary. It's fairly quick but a bit uncomfortable. I had my GYN explain to me the devices and instruments that he used for routine visits, what they were for and the purpose of going to a GYN. It helped ease my fears. I go every six months just to make sure that Im ok. It's still uncomfortable, but it's better than finding out you have some form of cancer when it's too late to reverse it. Good luck and I am sure it will go nice and easy for you. Take Care.

You can decline the PAP test, there is a blood test for it now. Most doctors still prefer to do the PAP but considering that it is less accurate I do not know what their problem is.
Do not do anything you are uncomfortable with, do not let the doctor talk you into doing anything uncomfortable --that is called rape.
