the main reasons for me not to fumagate or spray stuff around the house is that I have 3 small kids.
I need to work around this.

We had a really bad ant problem for a while. Finally my mum got so sick of it she screamed and yelled and swore at them for a good 10 minutes, and I swear, they all disappeared and never came back. Give it a try - it's free, and safer than fumigation.

Although the little black ants all look the same to us giants, there are different kinds and they like different foods.
For most of them, I use a mixture of boric acid and pancake syrup; most of them love this. I drizzle this over the plants and things around the outside of the house. I renew it every few days. It takes time, but this will kill an entire colony. It is nontoxic to humans and pets, it only harms animals that have an exoskeleton. Sometimes I dampen a crumpled paper towel and set it near the ants indoors; when they are swarming all over it, I throw it out the window. This helps to draw the ants out of the house. Unfortunately, after you kill off a colony, another colony can move in, but it will probably be a smaller one.
If the ants don't like the pancake syrup, mix boric acid with something they like.
Boric acid is sold as a bug powder or roach powder; you have to read the ingredients to see. Medical boric acid will work but is more expensive.

Have you called a professional exterminator? They spray the base boards about every few months and take care of nests that might be hiding outside.
I like Raid and spray the baseboards myself around summer time. Also there is this insect abatement stuff (and fertilizer) you can put around the perimeter of your home to keep the ants outside.

Terro does not work. The only way to get rid of them and their eggs is to fumigate.
