but God picked the ethnic and gender and time and place

God and Nature chooses which species we are born into and God, Biology and Genetics chooses which gender we are born into.

Our parents! the chances of you even being born are a trillion to one. So you beat the odds just being here.
Each birth is really a miracle. When you think of the complex changes the baby goes through. Watch the tape it is amazeing.

The species is determined by the animals that mate , the sex is decided by which sperm ( x or y ) that fertilizes the egg . Some eggs go male or female by the temperature they are incubated at.

I always wanted to be a male armadillo, and I ended up being a female human.
If you are a Christian (or a Muslim or a Jew) then I suppose you could say it is God who chooses.
So I strongly recommend lodging your complaint with him.
If you are an atheist though, well, I guess it is just down to luck. For better or for worse.
