Empathy. You feel badly for them. You must be a very caring person !

It is called empathy. Plainly speaking, we put ourselves in the other person's position and by reliving it we show that we care for their painful experience and thus show support.
It is much better than saying "Yeah. That's sucks." with a stone cold face. Although crying in every situation is an extreme. An understanding face and a hugh, with a couple of nice words so much better.
