Get yourself a Lloyds TSB Gold current account and as long as you have a balance of over £1500 the account is free. They give you £65 worth of free AA cover as one of the perks. Also free mobile phone and card protection too + others.
I've had this facility for 4 years now and never broken down once. My car is 12 years old and has 165,000 miles on it. Am I just lucky or a Honda owner? ;-)

The AA are brilliant - they turn up fast if you need them (especially if you're a lone girl);
They are efficient with the car and can usually sort it out;
They will give you a lift home if they can't fix it;
They offer variable rates of cover (ranging from the cheapest, where they'll rescue if you're not walking distance from home, to starting your car for you in the driveway);
They are always friendly, get you cheaper car/home/travel insurance and offer discounts, weekends away and vouchers to their members every so often.
