I am a wildlife photographer and one of my subjects is the adder.
I have been biten twice, not through being stupid or careless but some of them are so small and so hard to see that it just happens.
I will never give up photographing snakes, so, no answers to this affect please.
Has anyone out there been biten or do you know anyone who has been biten. The second time was from a young female and it was quite nasty. This was around 5 months ago now and my ankle still swells up (slightly) and gives me a lot of pain, i have to stop walking sometimes where it is too bad.
Please don't say go to the doctors as i know what they will say. All i want to know is, has anyone out there had the same experience?

I am genuinely concerned about the condition since it has been five months. I admire your courage photographing snakes, but mate, it could never be me!
I suppose you know the younger they are, the less able they are to control how much venom they discharge. So... you probably got far more than in the first bite.

Yea, snakes do this. Most will move from you, but, when they feel cornered they fight back. Many are not poisonous, I thought the Adder fell into this category, or, the ones here do. It may have struck/damaged a nerve which could take some time to heal if it does. May cause a little trouble from now on, but, hopefully in time it get better. I really not think a Doctor can do much, other than tell you what I have. I been bit by Pythons, Garter, Black and a Rattle Snake. The Rattle Snake did not get a good strike as I was Dancing. The others struck as I was handling them. I never had any long term after effects, just a scared up hand/finger from the sharp teeth. I found not to try to pull loose when they on you, as the teeth slant back to hold their prey. Trying to pull loose just pull their teeth deeper. This all I know, really, it sound like it may have damaged a nerve and I hope it get better over time.

Sounds like you're beginning to get an allergic reaction to the venom. I have no idea why you ankle still swells, but it may be some kind of residual reaction to the venom. Might be worth looking up a few allergy websites, I've heard of similar happening after bee stings, but not snake bites, though as they're both a type of venom I guess it's entirely possible.

I know you said don't tell you to go to the doctor, but it may be worth going to them if only to get prescribed an epi-pen in case you get bitten again, just in case you have a severe anaphylactic reaction to a future bite.

Thats really wierd. I got bitten once, when I was about 13 or 14. I fell down a huge embankment and landed on one, so its so wonder it bit me really! The bite was on my ankle too, but I didn't get a reaction like that - my leg swelled up to just under the knee and was painful for a few days, then started to heal. I didn't have any other sypmtoms apart from the swelling, and it didn't need any treatment, just ibuprofen for the pain and swelling. I have never had any trouble with it since, and it only took a short time to heal. So I don't know why you are still having trouble with your ankle.

Thankfully I haven't had that experience. I met and cared for someone bitten by a viper once which is probably pretty similar. both snakes are poisonous anyway. I presume you know what first aid to do when bitten if you work with snakes regularly. Hope your bite clears up and the pain goes. Unusual that it still swells though. Maybe you have alot of histamine. It happened me when stung by a crazy bee/wasp. when stung again elsewhere, the original area swelled up again. Good luck.

While completeting my thesis on amazonion ecology, I was advised by the locals to eat 30 fizzbombs/day to protect me from venomous bites and stings.
Something about them repulses certain creatures and immunizes against all venom.
Trust me , you will never need antivenom or adrenaline.
