'Shine' - about the depressive pianist
'Walk The Line' - Johnny Cash biopic with Joaquin Phoenix
'Almost Famous' - boy works in record shop, becomes journalist for Rolling Stone
'Amadeus' - Mozart
'What's Love Got To Do With It' - Ike/Tina Turner
There's also The Pianist, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne, Dancer In The Dark, The Producers, Help!, The Rutles, Moulin Rouge (though they're not really bio-pics)

I love that sort of film too and if you like What's Love Got to Do with It (Tina Turner) and Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) you will definitely like Stand By Your Man which is Tammy Wynette's life story. It stars Annette O'Toole who plays Lana Lang in Superman III. It's quite similar to the Tina Turner one because Tammy also toured with her husband, singer George Jones, and endured a violent relationship with him too. It's a very well cast film and a brilliant story.

The Doors is good, although not very accurate.
A few good ones not already mentioned which don't really tick all your boxes are Nashville by the late great Robert Altman, more about the scene than an individual. The Beatles films are good but more tenuously autobiographical. Head by the Monkees is in the same vein.

24 hour party people - story of factory records, acid house culture, tony wilson, etc, excellent
The Filth and the Fury - The true story of the sex pistols, even if your not a fan of the music, fascinating look at the punk era from the bands own mouth.
End of the century - the story of the great grand daddies of punk the ramones, great insight into the whole new york scene and how they revolutionised the music scene at the time also emphasises just how much influence iggy and the stooges had as well.

Stoned is a film about the founding member of the Rolling Stones and the events surrounding his death. It is excellent! Why don't you ask for old concert footage. For example Bruce Springsteen has a 40th anniversary dvd that is really good. Bob Marley has a couple of good ones too.

I would recomend an old title, The Jolson Story. It's colourful, full of Jolson Songs and quite humourous. It's a pity Larry Parks (Who played the adult Jolson) got clobbered by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities.
