sounds like a cherry to me, they all seem to drip sap, it's actually a disease called a canker, or a dead sunken spot on trunk or limb caused by a specific bacterial infection, this wound weeps sap through the bark (gummosis) in an attempt by the tree to remove the pathogen. this condition is very common on fruit trees and will not kill them quickly. there is no practical treatment and generally the tree will hang on but fruit trees are generally considered a short lived plant (10 -20 years?) Ornamental cherry has bark that is gray with white or light dots (lenticels) in straight, horizontal rows.

not knowing what country you live in .! are you sure it is a cherry ,
sounds more like a maple they all weep sap and the leaves should all have turned yellow by now. if the tree has had a lot of growth this year sap will continue seeping check the tree for nails .lower down on the trunk . tip ie get someone from your local tree nursery and take a leaf they can tell you what tree it is.goodluck hope this advise has been helpful

Take a sample of the bark and residue to your local garden centre or tree nursery - they will be only too pleased to help advise what it is and whether you need to take action.

you need to investigate this further to see if this is normal for that kind of tree or if aphids or other critters may be boring into the tree for its sap!! for some trees this is normal,, so identify your tree well
