Illegal in most states. Plus they will tear up everything in your house, and it would be cruel to make it stay confined in a cage for long period of time. They are a highly active animal.
Why don't you try sugar gliders? They are a legal version of a squirrel (they are flying squirrel like marsupials). Just google for them and I heard that as long as they are socialized, they make good pets. I have worked with some non-tame ones, and I think with enough time, they would be easy to socialize.

Squirrels are wild animals, and generally it is frowned upon to take a wild animal out of it's habitat to have it live within your house. You have to remember that you can't just go to any old pet store and buy a squirrel, so there is some issue with it. I don't know if it is legal where you live, however. You'd have to ask the animal control officer in your area. However, they'll probably tell you is isn't allowed.. And it's nearly impossible to find someone who breeds them domestically.

Where I live people can have a pet Squirrel. Check with your local "Game and Fish Commission" to be sure it OK where you live. They may know where you can find one. Be warned, I have had friends with pet Squirrels. They really fun at first. As they age they may become more aggressive, not always, but, they can get mean.

er, yeah - I think there are a lot of good reasons to NOT have a pet squirrel - most homes are not set up to withstand the damage that they can inflict! I don't believe I'd want a problem-solving escape artist, however cute, in my home.....

You may regret that. They look cute but they don't make good pets. They are aggressive and destructive. I'd do a lot more research into them before making a decision.
