I am just curious as to whether other parents were ever concerned over the way their babies head is shaped. My son is almost 8 mths old and still has a very flat spot on one side and a more protruding spot on the other side (in the back). It is quite noticable. Will this even out? He has been sleeping on his stomach of his own accord for a few months now. He used to only want to turn his head to one side no matter how much we propped it as per doctor's advice, when he was really little. I am going to ask the doctor at his next appointment in a week, but am curious to what other's think or if they had a similiar experience.

Let it grow naturally baby has soft bone around their heads and it ebbs and flows a bit before being permanent.
Please don't worry cause hair usually covers up imperfections eventually .. sometimes mothers worry so much, like my neighbor, she went to 4 doctors until she had one do an elective surgery on that poor baby; had netting put in.. all the good doctors told her it was natural and she had to find a wacko that would do the surgery. (but I am sure she paid for a new Mercedes for the doctor).

My baby also has a flat spot on the left side of her head so we try laying her on her right. The doctors advised me that the baby could have some neck stiffness in the side that they do not favor adn to kind of move her head from side to side to get the stiffness out. Also to change sides of the crib your baby sleeps on, or when feeding your baby if you do it in your arms put on the side that is flat. I am concerned as well...sleeping on the other side is not helping, if worse comes to worse there is a helmet that they can wear, but its like 2500 here in canada and not covered. Because your baby is a boy it is more important for it to even out because having a misshappen head is going to be a lot more noticable.

I learned that babies bones are not very dense until after the first year. In fact xrays aren't even needed; the dr can use an ultrasound machine to "xray" the bones. The head will even out when he's older. Another thing to consider is some people just have funky shaped heads!! As long as this isn't associated with a medical condition then don't worry.

Your doctor will be able to judge this better than we can. We can't see our child's head through here... But it is very common these days and there is a remedy that won't hurt the baby. They make a custom helmet thing for your child and while they are still young they correct the problem. It isn't painful and well worth the effort.

Yes, my son still has it and he is 16 months old. His doctor doesn't seem to mind and always tells me it will go away on its own. And it does, it really does, because you can see the difference from one month ago. So it is improving. Maybe for your peace and quiet you go to an osteopath and he/she can gently massage baby's head: It helps in some cases. Who knows, your baby might even enjoy it...
