It's there for you to be able to find the "5" key by touch. Because it's in the centre of the keypad, once you find the "5" key you can find all the other keys.

Look at your computer keyboard. The "F" and "J" keys should have a dot or a tab on it. It's the same principle. People who type without looking at the keyboard use these keys to position their hands properly for typing.

That is so you can find the middle in the dark or for a blind person. If you notice most keyboard have makes on F and J.

so that if you're a blind customer you will be able to work out where the other numbers are! It's also a good inital test for denerative nerve disease.... can you still feel the mark?

maybe it's for people who have no sight - they can locate the middle key and operate the phone/computer from there
