It's there for you to be able to find the "5" key by touch. Because it's in the centre of the keypad, once you find the "5" key you can find all the other keys.
Look at your computer keyboard. The "F" and "J" keys should have a dot or a tab on it. It's the same principle. People who type without looking at the keyboard use these keys to position their hands properly for typing.

That is so you can find the middle in the dark or for a blind person. If you notice most keyboard have makes on F and J.
